About Dr. Bailey

Debra S. Bailey, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist in West Hartford, Connecticut

Debra Bailey, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in West Hartford, Connecticut, whose career spans more than two decades of clinical, academic, and research work. Her training is unusually broad. She completed doctoral training at Kent State University through a dual-track curriculum that included Experimental Psychology, with a focus on Personality Theory and Social Psychology, and Clinical Psychology. She later completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Yale-affiliated West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital.

Before entering psychology, Debra S. Bailey, Ph.D., spent years in the competitive equestrian circuit, training and showing Arabian horses across the United States and Canada. That experience cultivated discipline, patience, emotional attunement, and respect for the slow, careful work of building trust. Those qualities would later become central to her therapeutic presence.

Her pre-doctoral Clinical Psychology internship took place at an American Psychological Association-approved psychiatric hospital in Connecticut, where she worked with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. She chose that setting because she was drawn to clinical complexity and believed that meaningful engagement with people experiencing severe mental illness would deepen her ability to help a wide range of clients.

Following her fellowship, Dr. Bailey worked in inpatient psychiatric settings, developing crisis intervention skills and a grounded understanding of acute human distress. She later directed a statewide mobile crisis program in Connecticut, a role that required clinicians to meet people in some of their most vulnerable moments. She subsequently managed a hospital-affiliated outpatient program with multiple sites across Connecticut.

Her contributions have also extended into policy, teaching, and research. Dr. Bailey served on provider advisory committees for managed care organizations and held teaching and research appointments at several universities, including Cornell University Medical College’s Department of Psychology in Psychiatry. Her scholarly work includes published journal articles and a book chapter on topics such as the relationship between alcohol use and aggression.

Her forthcoming book, The Elephant and the Turtle: A Metaphor for the Work of Psychotherapy and Personality Change, reflects her integrated approach to mental health. The book explores psychotherapy, personality change, humor, play, and creativity as part of the therapeutic process.

Today, Debra Bailey, Ph.D., works with older adolescents and adults in her West Hartford practice. Her clinical philosophy is relational, reparative, and evidence-informed. Influenced in part by British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott and the concept of the “good-enough mother,” she approaches therapy as a space where people can reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been hidden, defended, or misunderstood.

Dr. Bailey believes effective therapy begins with genuine presence. She listens carefully to both the words being spoken and the emotions beneath them, creating a “safe enough” environment where clients can explore patterns, pain, fear, resilience, and the possibility of change.
